Rock Hunting

I love books, nature, art, and gardening. I’m a rock hound and that’s me up there with a cool fossil rock I found last summer. Although writing has always been a big part of my life, I’ve also had careers in police work, real estate law, and nursing.  Unfortunately my beautiful, wonderful husband passed away in 2016.  He was my companion, best friend and soul mate.  I have two handsome and wonderful sons who have kept me going. I love animals, especially boxer dogs. Unfortunately my two boxers, Bernie and Charlie are no longer with us, but my silly, little Shih Tzu, Buddy is enough to keep me hopping. For my blog policies go to the copyrights and policies page. Thanks so much for visiting my home on the web.

Okay, that’s my personal about me, now you might as well read the official stuff too.

After working for years as a freelance writer of both fiction and nonfiction for newspapers and magazines, Elizabeth Melton Parsons now prefers writing novels under the name of E. G. Parsons. A confirmed tomboy, she loved growing up amidst the wild beauty of the Florida Everglades. Elizabeth was born the 5th child of six, with four brothers and one sister. Her parents were hardworking farmers who instilled in her a love of the rural life and faith in God. Elizabeth always loved books, learning to read before entering school. She began writing poetry at age twelve after reading Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allen Poe. In recent years her poetry has been featured in College and High School syllabuses. Elizabeth loves reading and writing romantic tales interwoven with intrigue, mystery, suspense and the paranormal. Being a member of various writing guilds and workshops over the years has helped to define her realistic and unique style. Elizabeth resides on the beautiful coast of Daytona Beach with her sons, and doggie  Buddy.

  3. I’m an older writer trying to break into the inductry with my debut novel. I think older writers definitely have the experience to write more insightful and indepth material than someone younger. However, I would never want to be stereotyped if I was young or old. Anyway, here’s to older writers (clink) may we persevere.

  40. Your experience as a freelance writer shows. I was a freelancer for ten years, and working on deadline blew away all my writer’s block. It made me totally familiar with the writing mechanism. I wrote 500 articles in that decade. Once you’ve gone through that, you know what language can and cannot do, and then work hard to do what you can. I, too, am writing novels now. Just published my first (see my own blog for info on that). In theatre, they say, “Break a leg.” In writing, they should say, “Break a pencil.”

    • Thank you, David. I enjoyed my magazine writing, but newspaper articles are definitely not for me. My first article was published as is, but then they offered to publish my articles on a regular, but still freelance basis. My first one came back from my editor covered in red ink. I had to rewrite it in three days with all trace of my feelings or opinions (good or bad) gone from the piece. I couldn’t even use an adjective that might convey any trace of what I thought. After six months, I quit, Couldn’t take that kind of writing. 🙂

      • You ever get the feeling that you were being reduced to a writing machine? I did. Unable to make such a machine with computer chips, they were given a freelance budget. My first article in “Mademoiselle” was a thrill, but the following month, it was old news, nobody cared.

        Like

        • A machine…that’s it exactly. That’s what they wanted. An automaton with no personal input at all. I truly admire news journalists for their ability to write news stories every day. They are so far above me. Writing for “Mademoiselle” had to be quite a feeling. It may have been old news a month later, but the feeling it gives one to be accepted by such a magazine will last a lifetime. And that’s what matters most. 🙂

I still regret to this day that I didn’t visit Edgar Allan Poe’s home of six years in Philadelphia while driving through the US with my hubby. That would have been quite something.

  45. Elizabeth! I am so pleased to read your about page. I am also glad to know some of your childhood, birth order, family situation and your boxer dog, too. I had a cat once who thought it was a beagle like its other animal companions! I like the fact you are interested in a lot of the same subjects. I drew more than wrote while young but have enjoyed Language Arts as a teacher and in my college studies, always preferred reading literature of all kinds. You are an acclaimed author, so good to know! I am in awe of your experiences and also, humbled by your visits/presence in my blog! Thank you for your encouraging and kind words about my social life and future “soul mate.”
