Old Man Winter Is Angry

50 Comments

A couple of days ago I was listening to Robins sing at the window and watching Bluebirds and Towhees beginning to nest. My tulips were up about four inches, sedum and hyacinth too. I thought spring was just around the corner. Then Monday night and all day Tuesday we were blasted by old man winter. Heavy snow, frigid temps and howling wind blowing it all around. I’m wracking my brain trying to remember what in the world I did to that old man to raise his ire to such a degree. I’m thinking about baking chocolate chip cookies as a piece offering.  I want spring and I think Robert Frost did too while writing his poem: To The Thawing Wind. Here’s the poem and a glimpse of our new snow.

To The Thawing Wind

Come with rain, O loud Southwester!
Bring the singer, bring the nester;
Give the buried flower a dream;
Make the settled snowbank steam;
Find the brown beneath the white;
But whate’er you do tonight,
Bathe my window, make it flow,
Melt it as the ice will go;
Melt the glass and leave the sticks
Like a hermit’s crucifix;
Burst into my narrow stall;
Swing the picture on the wall;
Run the rattling pages o’er;
Scatter poems on the floor;
Turn the poet out of door.

…Robert Frost

  1. Yes, indeed, Robert Frost. Elizabeth: You’re so right. Even he – with a name like Frost – got tired of it all sometimes.

    Thanks for this poem. I’ve never read it before.
    We are in snowland here too. But the Atlantic provinces seem to be up to their peetoozies in the stuff. I’ve seen some pictures from New Brunswick and Lordy, Lord!

    • I’ve heard it’s very bad up there. I should be ashamed to complain about our 14 inches and sub zero temps. I know it could be worse and even has been. But I’m not. I shall continue to complain because I’m not young enough to love this stuff anymore. I feel exactly as Frost does in that poem. Stay safe and warm, Cynthia. 🙂

      • Complain on! I always think that everyone has a right to complain, and we shouldn’t measure the size of our misery against that of others’. complain, complain, complain! And 14 inches of snow is a lot. I’m feeling sympathy for my maritime cousins out yonder.

  4. I think Winter was just having a little sulk because no-one has especially enjoyed him and his white coats this year. Once he get’s over the current paddy he’ll get back on track and let his little sister Spring in to play.

  5. The birds have been singing outside my window too but I haven’t seen my tulips yet, they’re buried under snow! 🙂 In fact, it’s snowing now. If it helps I’ll make cookies too. Thanks for sharing Frost’s poem. Stay warm and safe.

  6. He’s certainly putting on a show this season. We had an ice storm last night, Elizabeth. Like you, only recently we were enjoying 70 degree temps and now this. Sigh…

  7. nice that you had a peak of spring, we have been under two feet of snow for over two full months now, no signs of spring in sight, I’m starting to worry that many of my plants won’t survive the intense cold

  8. I don’t even believe in tulips or hyacinth this time of year.

  9. Hi Elizabeth. Hopefully spring will come soon. Even in Florida the weather hasn’t been all that great , but I am too embarrassed to complain because what the northerners including my family are enduring it is paradise here. However having said that when the wind blows here it is cold.Oh Oh that did sound like complaint didn’t it?
    Beautiful photographs of the snow. Love the purple hue, I assume the photos were taken at dusk . Keep well.

  10. Sorry to read that you are snowed in Elizabeth. No snow here. Just almond tree blossoms and patches of tiny white daisies everywhere. Keep warm my friend. xoxox ❤

  11. I keep praying for the snow, Elizabeth, but it keeps going every place but HERE!!!!! Oh gee. And to think I had to shave my legs over the weekend, ‘cuz I’m in shorts and flip flops out here!!! Darn! Ya think you can send some our way?????? 🙂 Sending CA warmth, Kiddo!!!! 🙂

    • That’s right, girl, rub my nose in it…shorts and flip flops indeed! We got another 4 inches last night on top of the ten inches we got yesterday. If I could afford a large freezer truck, I’d send every flake to you in exchange for the CA warmth. Then we’d both be happy as pigs in mud. 😀

  14. Lovely poem by Frost – we’re all tired of old man winter (although we don’t have snow, just frigid temps) and I’m sure that Spring will hit us quick in another week.

  17. Elizabeth, so sorry to hear about your snow storm. I thought my fairy friend sent you some warm weather… But maybe old man winter caught a glimpse of her and it raised his ire? I hope not! Too funny, I just finished baking a big batch of chocolate chip cookies this afternoon and it is nearly 80 degrees, so I’d give it a try! 🙂
