Moon Red Halo

Around 11:30 last night I was standing on the porch enjoying the the night sky when I noticed the moon had a giant red halo. I believe they call it a 22 degree halo. I’ve seen plenty of moon halos as well as sun halos, but I’d never seen anything like this. The ring was huge and thick, but it was the color that was so phenomenal. It was blood red. Amazing. I was disappointed I had no way to capture an image of it. My phone and camera aren’t worth two pennies when taking a shot of this kind of night image. I found a similar image on wikimedia. You’ll have to imagine this ring being much thicker and a blood red color, then you’ll have an idea of what I witnessed. I went back out at midnight to look again, but the ring had dissipated. They say a red ring around the moon means bad weather. I don’t know about that, but it did rain this morning. 😀 It actually has to do with refraction of moonlight/sunlight reflection  and ice crystals. Did any of you see this large red ring last night? Were you fortunate enough to get a photo? If so, I’d love to see it.

Here’s the image from wikimedia:

  1. Ain’t nature grand, Elizabeth? Even when it’s clobbering us with too much wind, or snow.

  2. I saw it too, Elizabeth. It was spectacular. Unfortunately my camera isn’t capable of shooting at that distance, so I have it etched in my mind. 🙂

  3. That must have been quite a sight Elizabeth. What a shame you lacked the means to picture it.

  4. We had one of these a few weeks ago…they are so cool! Usually means bad weather is coming, but like you it just didn’t happen.

  5. I have never seen a red moon halo, will start looking for them! I may have already been in REM sleep stage at midnight last night. 🙂 Clear and cold morning here in the Northeast with some snow falling tonight.

    • Oh, yes, you must start looking, Geralyn. It was gorgeous. I’m a little envious of the REM sleep at midnight. I’m a night owl, so my REM is about the time I have to get up. 😉 Hope your weather doesn’t get too bad. I heard it was pretty nasty in the Northeast a couple of days ago.

  9. When I try to take photos of distant moon, I have had a pinkish cast but the red never is captured. I love that you were motivated to post about moons, Elizabeth. I did not see the red ring, our skies were cloudy and pouring rain!
I am a big cloud and moon watcher. I am going to post my monthly calendar, which I always include the moons. I wish I had been able to see the Comet Lovejoy last month, one of my friends was able to see it, but I did see bursts of yellow and gold in the sky at the time the Comet was around. (It was around Epiphany, when the ‘wise men made it to the manger’ is how a Catholic friend explained this wonderful view.

    • I never saw the comet, but would have loved that, Robin. I did see Halley’s Comet once a long time ago. I camped in the yard and watched it until I fell asleep. It was so clear and looked so close with just the naked eye. I’ll never forget that. 🙂

  10. What a wonderful sight that must have been! I really can’t remember what I was doing the night before last or what the weather was like! That bodes well for the future doesn’t it?! I do remember seeing lots of lunar eclipses in the 80’s and the full solar eclipse about 15 years ago – that was amazing.

  12. Hmmm…. I didn’t notice that. But if I am outside at night (putting out rubbish or some such) I usually check the moon and stars.

  13. How cool is that! I missed seeing it here in California. Thanks for your comments on my blog about what you are doing with your online presence. It’s great to hear what other’s are doing and to know I am not the only one making changes. Thanks for sharing!
