The past three weeks have been pretty tough for our family. Two family members have passed away and now we must say goodbye to Charlie. For those who don’t know, Charlie is our boxer. We adopted Charlie when he was five and he’s now eleven. A fairly normal, perhaps even long life span for a boxer, but not nearly long enough in our opinion.
For those who’ve had the privilege of living with one these beautiful animals, you know their personalities are beyond fabulous and their devotion to family unparalleled. Charlie had a rough start in life and we take some comfort in knowing we’ve given him the love and care he deserved for the past six years.
He developed a problem with walking about six months ago. We tried all the expensive medications and pain relievers, but it seemed to make no difference at all. His condition continued to rapidly decline and he’s now totally lame. We thought of hip replacement, but sadly the vets we we visited didn’t consider this a viable option.
Making the decision for euthanasia has been a difficult and painful one, but one that had to made for his sake. At first I refused to even consider it, but finally realized how selfish I was being. So today we say goodbye to our friend.
